The Devonport Half Marathon
The Devonport Half Marathon in Auckland stands as a testament to the city's vibrant running community and its commitment to fostering health, camaraderie, and a love for the sport. Established as an annual tradition, this event traces its roots back to the early 2000s, when a group of passionate parents from Stanley Bay School came together with a vision to create an event that celebrates healthy competition amidst the picturesque backdrop of Devonport's scenic landscapes.
Originally only a 5k and 10k event called the Devonport Classic, early editionswere based at the Navy sports fields in Ngataringa Bay ... and even included a trip through the secretive Navy Tunnel and into the heart of the naval base at Stanley Bay! The event then spent a few years at Fort Takapuna - near Narrow Neck Beach - where a 15k distance was added. It was from there that the Running Events team took over and after one more year in Fort Takapuna (2015), the event was moved to its new - and, many would say, rightful - home at Windsor Reserve in the heart of Devonport Village. This is where the storied 21.1km distance was added and the event assumed it's new moniker, the Devonport Half Marathon.
