Important! These rules must be read in conjuction with the Running Events standard competition rules which will also be in effect for this event.

General Rules For All Race Categories
Due to the limited space at some points on course and the multi-lap nature of the event, we regret that nordic poles and similar devices are not permitted in any of the race categories.

Mighty Totara Backyard Ultra
The Backyard Ultra format will be new to many participants and there are some basic rules to be aware of as you prepare to take part.

  1. A warning signal will sound at 3 minutes, 2 minutes and 1 minute to go to the start of each hourly lap. You must be present in the start corral (and cross the start line) when the starting signal goes off. No start = DNF.
  2. Other than during the laps when Night Time Rules (see below) are in effect, you must not be accompanied by any non-competitor and must not receive any assistance, food or drink whilst completing your lap.
  3. The winner of the Last One Standing (individuals) race is the person who completes one lap more than any other competitor. If the final two (or more) competitors all withdraw on the same lap, there will be no winner and all competitors will be recorded as DNF.
  4. Should there be more than one participant left at the conclusion of Lap 35 (6:59pm Sunday / 234.5 km) then those competitors may continue at their own volition, unofficially and without event support. The official end of the event is at 7pm Sunday (if not before). Laps will continue to counted and times recorded on an unofficial basis.

Mighty Totara Team Relay
The team relay competitions shall commence at 7am (with the Last One Standing competitiors) and continue until the time limit for that team relay competition is reached (6 hours, 12 hours or 24 hours). The winners shall be the team with the most completed laps within the time limit. Incompete laps are not counted. Placings for each team shall be determined first by the total number of laps completed and second by the finish time of the last completed lap.

Night Time Rules (All Competitions)
Night Time rules will commence from the beginning of Lap 14 (9pm Saturday night) and continue until the end of Lap 22 (Sunday, 5:59am). During Night Time Rules:

  1. The Night Time course will be in effect (Night Time course will actually commence from 8pm to allow participants to see and experience the course change in daylight, prior to embarking on the first night time loop).
  2. Participants must wear a head torch and carry a cellphone with them.
  3. Participants may - and are strongly encouraged to - have another non-competitor accompany them on the lap.
